Ozark….Brother John William Whitfield Jr. was born in Washington, DC on October 16, 1932 to the late John William and Lillian Mae Griswould Whitfield. He was received into glory on August 12th, 2018. John was preceded in death by three siblings; James Bernard Whitfield, Georgiann Whitfield Quick, and Marie Whitfield. He was also preceded in death by his faithful wife, Evelyn.



          He was educated in the Washington, DC public school system. Upon exiting high school, John joined the United States Army in 1950 as a Military Police (MP). His Army career included service in Korea, Japan and Vietnam. In 1958, he married Evelyn Hazel Toney. To this union one son was born, Roderick Whitfield. They also raised another son, Vynn Toney, who preceded him in death.



          Upon retiring from the military in 1973, John was employed as a Federal Police Officer in Arlington VA. He and Evelyn attended Ebenezer AME church and became deeply involved in the sick and shut-in ministry. John also faithfully sang in the men’s choir.



          In 1995, he and his wife relocated to Ozark, AL. They attended Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Newton, AL where he was a deacon. He later attended 1st Missionary Baptist Church in Ozark, AL. He was a member of both the mass and men’s choir and also was a member of Sunday school and bible study.



           John is survived by his son, Roderick Whitfield; granddaughters Vynetria Toney, Faith Whitfield, and Sydney Whitfield; daughter-in-law Carolann Whitfield; Sisters-in-law Stella Toney Whitehead, Mary Toney May, Joyce Toney Henry (husband Cleveland); Brothers-in-law Raymond C Toney (wife Dorothy), Ernest Quick; many nieces, nephews, friends and family.



            Funeral services will be 11a.m. Saturday, August 18, 2018 at the First Missionary Baptist Church in Ozark, AL. with Pastor Leonard T. Evans, Jr. officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Newton, AL. with Fuqua Bankston Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends at Fuqua Bankston Funeral Home Friday evening from 5-7p.m.
