John Wilmer McLendon
Our beloved father, grandfather, and friend John Wilmer McLendon, went to be with our Lord on Wednesday, June 20, 2012. He was 97.
Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 23, 2012 at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bob Ledlow officiating. A private burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home on West Main Street directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to service time. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, P O Box 1346, Dothan, AL 36302.
Mr. McLendon was born May 8, 1915 in Pike County, Alabama, the eldest son of 9 children of John Washington McLendon and Chellie Estelle Henderson McLendon. A graduate of Midland City High School, Mr. McLendon served in the U.S. Navy as a member of the Seabees and Underwater Demolition teams during World War II. He retired from Burlington Industries after 35 years and then continued working for Herndon Oil until 1987. He and his wife of nearly 72 years, Katherine Parramore McLendon, were loyal members of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church where they first met in 1938. They were married June 29, 1940. Mr. McLendon was a Master Mason and Shriner.
He is preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers, Quincy and Charles; 4 sisters, Lois Faulk, Chellie Mae Robinette, Mattie Lee Borland and Lulu Edwards and a grandson, Matthew.
Surviving him are his wife, Katherine Parramore McLendon, Dothan; sons James McLendon, San Antonio, Texas and Bill McLendon, Panama City, Florida, 5 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Also surviving him is a sister, Mary Clark, of Dothan and a brother J.D. McLendon, Pensacola, Florida.
