ASHFORD. . .Johnnie James Whatley, a resident of Ashford, died late Sunday night, September 29, 2024, in a Dothan hospital. He was 97.


            Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, October 3, 2024, in the Big Creek United Methodist Church with Reverend Travis Free officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. Thursday in the church sanctuary. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Big Creek United Methodist Cemetery Fund c/o Rebecca Lawrence, 8071 South State Highway 605, Cottonwood, AL 36320.


            Mr. Whatley was born in Henry County and reared in the Pleasant Plains community, son of the late Harvey William Whatley and Lillie Hughes Whatley. He served his country in the U. S. Air Force during World War II. Upon discharge from the Air Force, he returned to farm with his father. In later years, Mr. Whatley was self-employed as the co-owner and operator of Whatley & Rice Plumbing & Electric in Dothan. He was a member of Big Creek United Methodist Church and the Plumbers & Steamfitters Local No. 366 in Pensacola. After retirement, he continued to farm with local farmers in the Big Creek community. He lived most of his adult lifetime in the Big Creek community, south of Dothan. Due to health issues, Mr. Whatley moved to Ashford in 2013 to be near his sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Billy Howard.


            Mr. Whatley was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Mary Lawrence Whatley and his second wife, Jean McKnight Whatley, his sons, Tommy Whatley and James Lawrence Whatley, a daughter-in-law, Seydi Whatley, a great-grandson, Gannon Watson, a brother, Harvey Gene “Preacher” Whatley, sisters, Christine Kirby, Becky Sue Whatley, Jackie Watford and Mary Vardamaskos,


            Surviving relatives include a son, Donny R. Whatley, Ft. Lauderdale, FL; a step-daughter, Jane Calvasino, Dothan; a sister, Margaret Howard (Billy), Ashford; a brother, Jerry Whatley (Kitty), Molino, FL; sister-in-law, Dale Lawrence Godwin, and a brother-in-law, Ronnie Lawrence, grandchildren, Johnny Ray Whatley, Johnathan Whatley, Matthew Houston, Jessica Jangbahadoor (Adaish); great-grandchildren, Chalisa Jangbahadoor, Madison Houston and Genesis Davis, Daniel Lara, several nieces and nephews including a very special niece, Kimberly Lawrence, Montgomery.
