BERTHA COMMUNITY…Johnny Franklin Spears, Sr., a resident of the Bertha Community, died Friday afternoon, May 6, 2016, at his home. He was 80.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, May 8, 2016, in the Wesley Chapel Community Church in the Bertha Community, with Pastor Tim Burgess and Reverend Greg Doss officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 P.M. Sunday at the church.
Mr. Spears was the son of the late Joseph Richard Spears and Johnnie Lorene Gill Spears. He was born and reared in the Bertha Community of Dale County and a 1953 graduate of Jordan High School in Columbus, GA. Mr. Spears formerly lived in Montgomery before returning to Bertha in 1998. He served his country in the U. S. Air Force and was a member of Ozark Praise and Worship, where he served the church and his Lord faithfully. Mr. Spears retired from Bowman Transportation as a truck driver and was also retired from the State of Alabama Department of Transportation as a rest area attendant. He was preceded in death by a sister, Sue Spears, and wives, Betty Frith Spears and Ann Burgess Spears.
Surviving relatives include three daughters, Joyce Cousins (Mike), Eclectic, AL; Tracy Mims (Terrell), Milbrook, AL; and Michelle Woods (George), Nashville, TN; two sons, Johnny Franklin Spears, Jr., Montgomery, AL; and Joe Spears (Deanna), Bertha Community; one sister, Jean Helms (Anthony), Texasville; ten grandchildren, Chris Cousins (Jessica), Kyle Cousins, Jeremy Cousins (Jessica Ann), Brandon Spears (Megan), Sean Spears (Allison), Amanda McClamroch (Melvin), Joey Spears (Kelsie), Alex Spears, Tiffany Mims and Taylor Mims; nine great-grandchildren.
Serving as active pallbearers will be the grandsons.
