Jon Page Crowell, 77, of Samson, AL, died at home on January 26, 2018. He was the third son of Lomax and Grace Chancey Crowell, both deceased. He is survived by his four siblings, Charles W. Crowell of Kinard, FL, James L. (Dora) Crowell, Jr. of Samson, Robert B. Crowell of Westville, FL, and Libba C. (Spencer) Campbell of Albuquerque, NM, as well as one nephew and three nieces.
He graduated from Samson High School, received a B.A. in English from Troy State College and an M.A. in English from the University of Alabama. He taught various English classes at Virginia Tech and at Davis and Elkins College as well as high school English in Tucker County, WV. He was the first Head Start Director for Tucker County and later became the West Virginia State Training Officer for Head Start. After his grandmother died in 1980, he divided his time between living with his aunt, Jewell Crowell, in Samson, and in West Virginia, where he continued to teach. After she could no longer live alone, he returned to Samson in 2001 to live full-time with her and cared for her until her death in 2009 at the age of 103. He remained in Samson.
Jon was known among friends and family for his love of books and classical music, for his compassion and strong ethical sense, as well as for his generous service to others. He cared deeply about the many people whose lives he touched. There will be no service. He donated his body to Anatomic Gifts Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports advancements in scientific research and medical education. He will be sorely missed.
