Joseph C. Metz, Sr.

Joseph C. Metz, Sr., a man of faith and valor, passed away on April 19, 2024, after an extended illness. Surrounded by the love of his family in Dothan, Alabama, Joseph's journey came to a peaceful end at the age of 90. Born on February 24, 1934, in New York, to the late Nicholas John and Anna Maria Metz, he spent his formative years in Long Island and carried with him the spirit of the city throughout his life.

After graduating from high school, Joseph proudly served his country as a member of the US Marines. His military career was marked by dedication and courage, including time spent in Italy and serving as a Vietnam Veteran. In 1971, he retired from the Marines, leaving behind a legacy of honor and discipline.

Joseph's commitment to service continued as he joined the Baltimore City Police Department, where he protected and served until his retirement in 1987. His sense of duty was unwavering, and his contributions to the safety of the community were immeasurable. Joseph then moved to Dothan, Alabama, where he worked with the City of Dothan at the Westgate Softball Complex, maintaining the grounds until his second retirement.

Family was the cornerstone of Joseph's life. He is survived by his loving children: two sons, Joseph C. Metz, Jr. (Michell) and Martin Metz (Hee Sook); three daughters, Dottie O'Brien, Gail (Nick) Smith, and Carrie Metz; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and his nieces and nephews, James Metz, Scott Willet, and Stacey Farrington. Joseph was a patriarch in every sense, teaching his family values and morals that will be cherished for generations. He is preceded in death by his brothers, John Metz and Tom Metz.

Joseph and his late wife, Dorothy, shared a passion for travel and created countless memories with their grandchildren. His selfless nature and courageous spirit were mirrored in his involvement with the Fraternal Order of Police and his dedication as a member of St. John's Catholic Church. He was a beacon of wisdom and love, guiding his family with a gentle hand and a strong moral compass.

As we remember Joseph, we recall the words of Shakespeare, "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players." Joseph played many roles throughout his life—marine, officer, father, grandfather, and friend. Each role was performed with unwavering commitment and love.

Joseph C. Metz, Sr.'s legacy will live on in the hearts of those he touched. He was a man who embodied the virtues of being faith-filled, courageous, and selfless. His life was a testament to the strength of character and the power of a loving family. We bid farewell to a remarkable man, whose spirit will continue to inspire all who knew him.
