HEADLAND…Joseph Dean “Joe” Smith, a resident of Headland, passed away Thursday afternoon, October 21, 2021, in a Dothan hospital. He was 83.


   Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, October 24, 2021, in the Old Center Methodist Cemetery with Reverend Joey Pettis officiating. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 5:30 P.M. Sunday in the Holman-Headland Mortuary Chapel. Social distancing and mask guidelines will be observed.


   Joe Smith was born and reared in Echo, Alabama, son of the late Charlie James Smith and Zell Dessie Goff Smith. He was engaged in farming most of his adult lifetime. Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Burkett Smith, a grandson, Joseph Oneal Hutto, two sisters, Bertie Jean Henderson and Myrtle B. Smith, and two brothers, Randy Smith and Danny Smith.


   Surviving relatives include five daughters, Myrtle Lester, Opp; Bertie D. Jenkins, Phenix City; Wanda G. Mathis, Phenix City; Lisa Bowman, Center Point, AL; and Diane Smith Frazier (Ricky Shiver), Headland; three sons, James Robert Smith (Linda), Phenix City; Joseph A. Smith, Headland; and Bobby J. Smith, Headland; two sisters, Linda Gayle Smith, Ozark; and Gloria Hendrix (John), Daleville; a special sister-in-law, Sue Mills, Headland; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
