HEADLAND. . .Joseph Hoyt “Joe” Thornton, a resident of Headland, died late Friday night, February 9, 2024, in the Dale Medical Center in Ozark. He was 88.


            Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, March 2, 2024 in the Holman-Headland Mortuary Chapel with Reverend Misty Barrett officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:30 until 11:00 A.M. at the mortuary in Headland.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Headland Methodist Church, 103 West King Street, Headland, AL 36345.


            Mr. Thornton was born in Quincy, Florida was raised in Jakin, Georgia and Dothan. He formerly lived in Isle of Palms, South Carolina before moving to Kinsey where he lived before moving to Headland in 1990. Mr. Thornton was a graduate of Rehobeth High School and attended college where he obtained a BS Degree in Pre Law. He was a member of the Headland Methodist Church. While living in Isle of Palms, South Carolina, he served as the Judge Pro Tem and as a City Councilman. He was a member and Past President of the Exchange Club and served as Scout Master for the Boy Scouts in Isle of Palms. Mr. Thornton retired from Solomon Chevrolet Cadillac in Dothan as a car and truck salesman. He was preceded in death by his father, Roscoe Thornton, his mother, Julia Jane Fort Joiner, a son, Jack Thornton, and four brothers, Bud Thornton, Jack Thornton, Lee Thornton and David Thornton.


            Surviving relatives include his wife, Jennifer Andrews Thornton, Headland; a son, Thomas Fort Thornton (Cynthia), Mt. Pleasant, SC; sister-in-law, Charlotte Whetstone (Mabrey), Wetumpka, AL; and a brother-in-law, Terry Andrews, Dothan; mother-in-law, Jeanelle Andrews; grandchildren, April Collins (Jeff), and Tisha Aycock; great-grandchildren, Tanner Collins, Walker Collins, Benjamin Holsapple, Cooper Holsapple and Annabel Holsapple.
