NEWVILLE. . .Joseph Michael (Joey) Tillis, a resident of Newville, died Saturday afternoon, February 13, 2016, in the emergency room of a Dothan hospital. He was 52.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, February 15, 2016, in the New Hope Baptist Church, Bertha Community, with Reverend Tom Chestnut officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 3:00 until 5:00 P.M. Sunday at the mortuary in Headland.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Abbeville High School Library, 411 Graball Cutoff, Abbeville, Al 36310.
Joey Tillis was born and reared in the Bertha Community of Dale County and was a 1982 graduate of G.W. Long High School in Skipperville. He was employed by Eastern Technologies, Inc. of Ashford. In earlier years, Joey was employed by Pemco World Aeroplex. He was the owner and operator of Henry-Houston Sports Officials Association and was serving as Commissioner of the Southeast Alabama Pee Wee Association. Joey was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church and had also attended Balkum Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his step-father, Jimmy Williams.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Chalice Bass Tilllis; two sons, Cody Tillis and Stetson Tillis (Maggie), all of Newville; a grandson, Greyson Tillis; his mother, Brenda Barefield Williams, Bertha Community; two sisters, Angie Tillis, Auburn; and Leslie Roller (Matthew), Wicksburg; a brother, Jeremy Tillis (Becky), Owensboro, KY; a mother-in-law, Lanetha Ogburn Bass, Headland; a sister-in-law, Jori Shelley (Jamey), Newville; numerous nieces and nephews.
