Josephine Adams McArthur


Josephine Adams McArthur, 97, a lifetime resident of Ashford, died Friday morning, July 25, 2014 at Southeast Alabama Medical Center following a brief illness.


Funeral services will be held 2:30  p.m. Sunday July 27, 2014 at Grace Park United Methodist Church in Ashford with  Dr. Sammy Prim and Rev. Griff Pemberton officiating. Burial will follow in Ashford City Cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home on West Main Street directing. The family will receive friends at the church1:00 until 2:20 p.m. on Sunday prior to service time.


In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Salvation Army or the Methodist Children’s Home.


Mrs. McArthur was born December 29, 1916 in Brewton, Alabama to Clyde Oates and Kate Williams Adams. At the age of 13, she moved to Ashford where she lived the remainder of her life. She was a graduate of Troy State Teachers College and later taught elementary school in Rehobeth and Ashford.


On June 11, 1941 she was married to Charles Clayton McArthur, Jr. and began her exemplary role as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She also served in numerous capacities in the community during her lifetime. She was a member of the Ashford Study Club and an accomplished bridge player and teacher. She was instrumental in the restoration of the Ashford Depot. Mrs. McArthur also volunteered with several organizations including the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society. She was the oldest member of Ashford United Methodist Church (now Grace Park United Methodist Church) and was a member of the Ruby Lee Adams Sunday School Class.


“Miss Josephine” was an outstanding example of a fine Christian Lady who put her family and friends first. Always filled with kindness, grace, love and compassion, she truly exemplified all the attributes of a true “Southern Lady”. Time will not diminish her legacy.


In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Charles Clayton McArthur, Jr. and a brother, Clyde Oates Adams, Jr.


Survivors include three children, Charles C. McArthur III (Vicki) of Tallahassee, FL, Phillip A. McArthur (Carol), of Greenville, AL and Sylvia M. Vaughan (Allen) of Homewood, AL; four grandchildren, Tatum M. Gerhardt (David), Clayton M. McArthur (Kaylan), Natalie V. Adkinson (Jesse) and Brett V. Schaeperklaus (Mark); six great-grandchildren, Theiss C. Gerhardt, Emmi T. Gerhardt, Cecilia E. Adkinson, Lucas B. Adkinson, Parker A. Schaeperklaus and Paige A. Schaeperklaus; several nieces and nephews and many other relatives; her caretaker, Carol Fairley, who  became her confidant and companion.
