HEADLAND. . .Josephine Jones “Josie” Whiddon, a resident of Henry County, between Newville and Abbeville, died early Friday afternoon, March 29, 2024, in a Dothan hospital. She was 84.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, April 1, 2024, in the Union Springs Baptist Church, near Newville, with Brother Jim Cordes and Reverend Jim Corley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Monday in the church sanctuary. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Union Springs Baptist Church or Union Springs Baptist Cemetery Fund, c/o Jackie Scott, 4217 State Highway 173, Newville, AL 36353.
Mrs. Whiddon was born and reared in Henry County, daughter of the late Warren Cecil Jones and Mavis Cutchen Jones. She was a 1957 graduate of Newville High School. Upon returning to Henry County, after Gerald retired from the Navy in 1975, Mrs. Whiddon received a B. S. Degree in Elementary Education and a Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education both from Troy State University in Dothan. She retired from the Abbeville Elementary School in 1999 as an Elementary School Teacher. Mrs. Whiddon was an active member of Union Springs Baptist Church where taught the Children’s Sunday School Class and served as Secretary-Treasurer for many years. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association and the Alabama Education Association. Mrs. Whiddon was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Alan Whiddon, a daughter, Jessie Cecilia Whiddon, a sister, Celia Jones, and three brothers, Tim Jones, Joey Jones and Mike Jones.
Surviving relatives include her husband, Gerald L. Whiddon; a daughter, Jennifer Whiddon Watson (Lee), Dothan; a grandson, Turner Lee Watson, several nieces and nephews. Gerald and Josie celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary, March 28, 2024.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Eric Jones, Chad Jones, Paxton McCoy, Sammy Jones, Matthew Jones and Jay Jones.
