Judy Barnes, a selfless, generous, and kind woman, passed away peacefully in her hometown of Dothan, Alabama on November 3, 2023. She was born on December 16, 1968, in the same town that she loved and called home for her entire life. Known affectionately as "Big Momma," Judy was a beacon of love and care in her family, always putting others before herself.
Judy graduated from Dale County High School and went on to attend Riley College, where she trained to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). Her nurturing spirit and kind heart led her to a fulfilling career in healthcare, where she served as a Nurse Assistant for many years. Following her work in healthcare, Judy worked as a cashier at the Easy Serve Gas Station, a job she enjoyed for the many people she met and interacted with daily. In 2014, Judy became disabled, but she never let this hinder her spirit or her ability to connect with and care for others.
Those who knew Judy best will remember her for her immense love for her family and friends. She is survived by her daughters, Amy Prewett and Courtney Aguillon, her grandchildren, Ryan and Carlos Aguillon-Tovar, and her brothers, Michael Childree Sr. (Margaret) and David Childree. She also leaves behind her special friends, Elifaz Zabrano, Susan Proctor, Irene Holder, and Sandy Kelly, all of whom she cherished and held close to her heart. Judy was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 13 years, Jessie Barnes and her parents, Willie and Nina Childree.
Judy had a special affection for the Dollar Store, a place she loved for its variety and affordability. She was also known for her dedication to her father, whom she took care of with immense love and patience. Judy was the kind of person who would go out of her way to help others, always putting the needs of others before her own. This selflessness, coupled with her generous and kind nature, is what made her "Big Momma" to all who knew her.
As we remember Judy, we celebrate a life well-lived, marked by love, generosity, and selflessness. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of her family and friends, and her memory will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have known her. Judy Barnes may have left us in body, but her spirit and the impact she had on others will forever be a part of Dothan, Alabama.
