NEWVILLE, AL… June Ledyard Whiddon, a resident of Newville, Alabama, passed away Saturday, October 29, 2022, at her home. She was 91.


Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Thursday, November 3, 2022, at Wright Funeral Home & Crematory Chapel with Pastor Harrison Steege officiating. Burial will follow in the Newville Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. prior to the service. Wright Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.


Mrs. June was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama to the late Charles Ledyard and Gladys Kicker Ledger. She had a BS in education and she taught elementary education in Georgia. Her proudest career was being First Lady of University of South Alabama for 35 years alongside her late husband, Dr. Frederick Palmer Whiddon, who was founder and long-time president of the University of South Alabama, the first four-year state-supported university in Mobile, Alabama. She was a very active member of the National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century, a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants. She also loved delivering Meals on Wheels for 15 years. She was a member of the Mount Hebron United Methodist Church in Newton, Alabama.


Leaving to cherish her memories is her daughter, Karen Whiddon Peterson (Tom); her sons, Charles Whiddon, John T. Whiddon (Linda), and Keith Whiddon (Suzanne); her ten grandchildren; and her five great-grandchildren.
