J. W. MILLS
AVON, ALABAMA. . .J. W. Mills, a resident of Avon, Alabama, died late Saturday night, August 9, 2014, in a Dothan hospital. He was 84.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Tuesday, August 12, 2014, in the Bluff Springs Baptist Church with Reverend Homer Davis, Jr. officiating. Graveside services with military honors will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:30 P.M. Tuesday in the church sanctuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bluff Springs Baptist Church “Audio-Video Fund”, 1990 Bluff Springs Road, Ashford, AL 36312.
Son of the late James Wilborn Mills, Sr. and Eunice Jones Mills, Mr. Mills was a lifelong resident of Avon. A 1949 graduate of Ashford High School, he served his country in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. He was retired from Red Fox Fertilizer as an office clerk. In earlier years, Mr. Mills was employed by the Dothan Hosiery Mill over twenty-five years and was a supervisor at the time the plant closed. He was an active member of the Bluff Springs Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. Mr. Mills was preceded in death by an infant son, a brother, Virgil Mills, and two sisters, Pauline Mills and Bonnie Rowland.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Ann Preston Mills, Avon; two sons, Preston Mills (Terri), Ashford; and Brad Mills (Melanie), Avon; a sister, Ruth Kirkland (Kenneth), Webb; five grandchildren, Kimberly Newberry (Scott), Shawn Mills (Hilary), Amy Mills, Cory Mills, and Alex Mills; three great-grandchildren, Cora, Nick and Eli; numerous nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law from the Preston family, Martha Hughes, Echo Community; Jean Scott (Ron), Deland, FL; and Sheryl Knight (Mike), Tampa, FL.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Shawn Mills, Cory Mills, Alex Mills, Jim Folkes, Jerry Ingram, Tim Wiggins, Steve Jordan, and Jamie Smith. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be members of the Ron Weeks Sunday School Class and also Zack Johnston, Doug Kirkland, Stan Kirkland, Steve Hughes, Ed Marshall, Darrell Sumner, Ronald Bullock, and J. T. Radney.
