Karen Maddox May was welcomed into the presence of Jesus Christ her Savior and Lord, whom she loved above all else, on Monday morning, June 15, 2015. She was 60.

Karen was born September 28, 1954, in Enterprise, AL, to the late Howard and Ann (Sowell) Maddox. She was a 1972 graduate from Enterprise High School, and she earned her BS in Elementary Education from Auburn University. Karen has been an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Dothan for 29 years and has served as a spiritual mentor and encourager to many. Karen was a passionate educator for 38 years and was the Stringer Street (Faine Elementary) media specialist for 35 years until she retired in May of 2014. Karen dedicated her life to serving Christ through service to others, and nothing gave her more pleasure than loving, nurturing and teaching her children. She led her daughters to have deep personal faith in God and taught them to pursue integrity, purity, humility, courage and faithfulness. She was full of compassion for others and her life was a constant and continual ministry to friends and strangers alike.

After a courageous 5 week battle with pancreatic cancer, Karen was mercifully called to heaven where she immediately embraced her heavenly father, reunited with family and friends, and more perfectly glorified the Lord of all Creation. In addition to bowing at His throne in forever worship, she is likely socializing, dancing, sewing, crafting (for others) and enjoying delicious food (calorie-free!). Her daughters, brothers and family celebrate her commitment to serving the Lord so faithfully for over 40 years. We will remember her love (especially for her children and granddaughter Lucy Ann), her joy, her warmth, her enthusiasm for life, and her faithfulness in serving her Savior. Please join us as we celebrate God’s grace and kindness in her life.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Courtney and John Calhoun of Dothan and Lauren and Tommy Crawley of Troy; granddaughter Lucy Ann Calhoun; two brothers, Keith (Anne) Maddox, Spartanburg, SC; Kevin (Velvet) Maddox, Enterprise, AL and; nephew Andrew (Michele) Maddox, Spartanburg, SC and niece, Savannah Maddox, Enterprise, AL; great-nephew, Brodie Maddox, Spartanburg, SC.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 17, at First Presbyterian Church in Dothan and funeral service will begin at 11:00 AM. Graveside service will follow at Meadowlawn Cemetery in Enterprise with Searcy Funeral Home directing.  In lieu of flowers, we welcome you to consider a donation to the Distinguished Young Women of Houston County PO Box 6605, Dothan, AL 36302, a scholarship program Karen passionately volunteered for over the past 8 years.

Serving as pallbearers will be Bill Reynolds, Henry Hart, Tom Sorrells, Richard Murphy, Jeff Jones and Brooks Cavell. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be the Conference Room Sunday School class and the EHS class of 1972.
