DECATUR, GEORGIA. . .Katie Elizabeth Bennett, a resident of Decatur, Georgia, formerly of Ft. Gaines, passed away Tuesday, June 13, 2017. She was 56.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. (EDT) Saturday, June 17, 2017, in the Ft. Gaines Baptist Church with Reverend Jeff Hines officiating. Burial will follow in the New Park Cemetery. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 12:00 Noon until 12:45 P.M. Saturday in the church fellowship hall.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Habersham Humane Society, Inc., P.O. Box 1442, Clarkesville, GA 30523.
Katie Elizabeth Bennett was born on January 13, 1961 to John Ward Bennett and Betty Walker Bennett. After growing up in Ft. Gaines, she completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Arts Education from the University of Georgia. She later received her Master’s in Business Administration from Piedmont College.
Katie pursued much of her life as an artist. She was a passionate painter and wrote a creative non-fiction book about life in Southwest Georgia titled The Tale of the Naked Hitchhiker. In her leisure, she studied family genealogy and spent time raising her two boys. While she lived in North Georgia, she was an active volunteer on behalf of the soup kitchen.
Surviving relatives include her two sons, Clayton Ward Bennett Koski, Decatur, GA; and Hunter Buchanan Koski and his wife, Priti, Arlington, VA; two sisters, Susan Bennett Lewis and her husband, Dr. Jim Lewis, Amory, MS; and Bess Bennett Hartley, Ft. Gaines; nieces, Carolyn Elizabeth Hartley, Lori Hartley Williams and her husband, Wade; a great-niece, Grace Elizabeth Williams; and a great-nephew, Matthew Wade Williams.
