Katina Brackins McKenzie, known affectionately as Katina to those whose lives she touched, departed this world suddenly on May 30, 2024, in Atlanta, Georgia. Born on July 6, 1972, in Dothan, Alabama, Katina's life was a tapestry of courage, warmth, and boundless love. Her journey began as the cherished daughter of Nancy (Jerry) Reed and the late Larry Brackins, Sr., and she soon blossomed into a woman of formidable strength and captivating presence.
Katina's life was a testament to her indomitable spirit and her unwavering commitment to family, service, and community. After graduating from Dothan High School, she furthered her education at Alabama State University, demonstrating her lifelong love for learning and personal growth. Her patriotism and dedication to her country were evident as she proudly served in the United States Army. Her professional path led her to the Disabled American Veterans (D.A.V.), where she continued to serve with distinction and compassion.
In her personal life, Katina was the heart of her family. She was a loving mother to Courtney Brackins, Sylvester Jackson, and Kordell Jackson, and a doting GiGi to her granddaughters, Azela, Bayleigh, Kamryn Iris, and Priscilla Rose Jackson. Her love extended to her mother, Nancy (Jerry) Reed, her grandmother, Jean Allen Brackins, her brothers, David (Cindy) Briggs, Jr., Larry Reese, Larry Brackins, Jr., and Larry Brackins, III, and her sisters, Teah (Eric), Latonya, and Aisha. Uncles, Robert (Colleen) James, Dennis (Cheryl) Hall, and Tommy Hall, along with her aunts, Maggie (Perez) Bruner, Van (Scottie) Hall, and Felecia Hall, also held special places in her heart. Her dog, Daisy, was a source of joy and companionship. Katina's legacy is carried on by her vast circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who found in her a confidante and a beacon of light.
Katina's life in Columbus and Montgomery, Georgia, was rich with the things she loved. Her interests were as diverse as her personality—traveling to new places, indulging in the culinary delight of crab legs and oysters, getting lost in a good book, or belting out melodies in the church choir. A member of the First Missionary Baptist Church, her voice was a vessel of praise and an inspiration to all who heard it. Katina's love for horror movies, singing, and her infectious laughter made her a joy to be around, earning her the endearing nicknames "The Doll" and "Queen B."
She was a woman who never met a stranger, whose openness and outspoken nature drew people to her. Katina's ability to connect with others was unparalleled, and she left an indelible mark on every soul she encountered. Her life was a shining example of the quote by Maya Angelou, "Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud." Indeed, Katina was that rainbow, bringing color and hope to the lives of many.
Katina's courage and friendly demeanor were not just facets of her character but the very essence of her being. She was loving in her actions, courageous in her battles, and a true friend to all. Her spirit, a blend of love and strength, will continue to motivate and encourage those who knew her.
As we celebrate the life of Katina Brackins McKenzie, let us carry forward her legacy of love, her courage to speak boldly, and her unwavering friendship. Let us remember her laughter, her songs, and the way she made each person feel seen and valued. Katina's story does not end here; it lives on in each act of kindness we extend, in every moment we choose courage over fear, and in the love we share freely, just as she did.
