Kay Fleming Henry, age 77, passed away Thursday evening, January 14, 2016, at Flowers Hospital, Dothan. Kay, is the wife of John D. Henry, U.S. Marine Corps, Retired. John is also a retired national sales executive with AAA Cooper Transportation Dothan, Alabama.
Kay was born June 23, 1938, in Jacksonville, FL. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Bennett and Helen Fleming (deceased).
She is survived by her son, William Bennett Baxter, U.S. Marine Corps Retired of Havelock, N.C., her daughter, Audrey Lamar Baxter Benton, of Virginia. Kay and John’s daughter, Lesley Louise Henry Hunter, of New Bern, N.C. Kay also has two sisters. Sally Fleming Scott and her husband, Bill Scott, who reside in Tifton, GA., Lynn Fleming Kirkpatrick and her husband, Don Kirkpatrick who reside in Jacksonville, FL. Kay, loved her children, her two sisters and her husband dearly. Kay, has 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Kay, has 3 special nieces, Nancy, Helen and Madeline, who are the children of Sally and Bill Scott. She has two special nephews, Allen and Brad, who are the children of Lynn and Don Kirkpatrick. Kay, loved all her family relatives. Kay grew up in Jacksonville, FL on Thornwood Lane. She was a proud graduate of Landon High School, Jacksonville, class of 1956. Kay was a very popular young lady at Landon High and was one of the beauties in her class. Kay and John, married March 19, 1962, when John was a young enlisted Marine prior to John being commissioned a Marine Officer in 1969. Kay, was a superb Marine wife and was very active in military wives organizations. She raised the children while John was away on deployments many years by herself. Kay worked several administrative staff positions in Jacksonville, Fl., Albany, GA., Hilton Head, S.C., and Honolulu, Hawaii. Kay, was on the executive staff during the development of Harbor Town Resort in the late 1960’s. She worked in the Marine Corps and Navy Exchanged System for several years. Kay, was a lady chairman of several committees at the Tournament Players Golf Championships at Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, during the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. When John and kay, moved to Dothan in 1986, where John is originally from, Kay, was a frequent volunteer worker for the Dothan Country Club Future Masters Tournament. They were members of the Dothan Country Club for 30 years. Kay’s health begin to decline some 8 years ago. She has been some what disabled for a long period of time before her death. She had been bed ridden and basically totally disabled for the past 8 months. She suffered with severe pain many years due to her acute back curvature. Kay, has elected to be cremated. She desires her ashes be scattered into the Atlantic Ocean at Atlantic Beach, FL. behind her family’s beach home. This will be a private family function.
There will be a memorial service for Kay at the Episcopal Church of the Nativity of Dothan, 205 Holly Lane on Friday, January 22, 2016 at 1 P.M. with The Reverend Peter R. Wong officiating.
Kay requested that donations be made to the Episcopal Church in her name. Kay and John, want to publically thank Dr. Michael Flanagan, Pain Management, Dr. Michael Soppett, family doctor, the staff of doctors and nurses at Divata Kidney Treatment Center, Dr. J. Paul Maddox and his staff, for the kind and professional care provided Kay. Kay also want to recognize Mrs. Pam Dickerson who was a tremendous help in the home caring for Kay. Kay and John are so thankful for the many friends who visited Kay and prayed for Kay’s recovery. The kindness by all will never be forgotten. Ward Wilson Funeral Home of Dothan is handling all final arrangements.
