Lamar Morris Coe, a lifelong resident of Dothan, died Thursday, June 2nd at Whitehall Assisted Living. He was 88 years old. There will be no visitation. Graveside services at Memory Hill Cemetery for family and friends will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial to Alabama School for the Deaf, P.O. Box 698, Talladega, AL 35161.
Mr. Coe was born in Dothan, January 27, 1928 to Hattie Morris Moody Coe & Clyde Lamar Coe. He attended Dothan schools through the 9th grade & received his high school diploma in 1946 from Columbia Military Academy, Columbia, TN. He received a B.S. in Agriculture from A.P.I. (Auburn) in 1951. He was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. Following graduation, he served a tour with the U.S. Air Force Veterinary Service during the Korean Conflict.
Following his discharge, he returned to Dothan & worked in the family dairy business, processing & marketing Golden Guernsey milk products from his father’s prize herd of Guernsey cows. He introduced to the Dothan market premium quality milk in half-gallon bottles, the city’s first homogenized milk, half-gallon paper cartons, and Tropicana orange juice. The family dairy, Mo-La-Jac Farms, was sold to Barber in 1960.
Mr. Coe returned to Auburn in 1961 and earned a degree in Pharmacy. During his second trip to Auburn, he served as president of the School of Pharmacy, Chairman of the Pharmacy Council, and installed the Auburn chapter of Kappa Psi Pharmacy Fraternity, serving as the founding Regent. He also served as president of the student APhA.
After graduation, he returned to Dothan to operate the family pharmacy, City Drug at The Doctor’s Center, until it was sold to Flowers Hospital. He then became the Chief Pharmacist at Revco Drugs until his retirement in 1990. He continued to practice pharmacy part-time in Dothan & Enterprise for a number of years.
Mr. Coe was a member of Greystone United Methodist Church (formerly Lafayette St.), a former Kiwanian, president of the Dothan Jaycees, president of the Dothan Quarterback Club, chairman of the City Recreation Board, and served a number of years as president of the Parkplace Homeowners Association. He was a lifetime member of Auburn Alumni Association & AU Pharmacy Alumni Associations.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Jacqueline Coe Kingry, his first wife, Martha Watford Coe, his second wife, Luverne Cobb Coe, one grandson, and one granddaughter.
Survivors include: Steve Coe, Dothan, Mike Coe (Sue Marie), Dothan, from his first marriage to Martha Watford Coe; Ricky Cobb (Sheila), Dothan; Paula Jackson (Don-deceased), Dothan, children of his second wife, Luverne Cobb Coe. Mr. Coe is also survived by one grandson, four granddaughters, nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter.
