Lanette Kirkland Meares Johnson Culbreth, a resident of Dothan, died Sunday morning, September 13, 2015, at her home. She was 93.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, September 16, 2015, at Southside Baptist Church, 423 E. Cottonwood Rd., Dothan, with Reverend Stacy Stafford and Reverend Hugh D. Kirkland, Jr. officiating. Graveside services will follow at Newville Baptist Church Cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Tuesday at the mortuary in Headland and also from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Wednesday in the sanctuary of Southside Baptist Church.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Hospice, 104 Rock Bridge Road, Dothan, AL 36303.
Mrs. Culbreth was born and reared in Newville, daughter of the late Robert Lafayette (Bob) Kirkland and Audrey Mae Kirkland. She lived in Newville most of her life before moving to Dothan in 1998. Mrs. Culbreth was a graduate of Newville High School and attended Florida State University where she majored in Music and Voice. Her lifelong passion was playing the piano. She used her God given talent playing for the Newville Baptist Church, Southside Baptist Church, the Southeast Alabama Community Theater (SEACT) and countless other occasions. Mrs. Culbreth was a member of Southside Baptist Church and a former member of Newville Baptist Church.
Mrs. Culbreth was preceded in death by a former husband, James Harry Johnson, Sr., a son, James H. (Jimmy) Johnson, Jr., a grandson, James H. (Trey) Johnson, III, three brothers, Oren Kirkland, Jerry Kirkland and Joe Ed Kirkland and her first husband, Vance Brown Meares.
Surviving relatives include her husband, Joseph Rudolph (Rudy) Culbreth; a daughter, June Meares Collins (Joe Frank), Dothan; a son, Kirk Meares (Mary Beth), Newnan, GA; six grandchildren, Amy Brakenhoff (Brian), Jan Oliver (Bill),Audrey Johnson (Robert), Amanda Heard (Josh), Mikki Barnes, and Missi Byars (Neal); seven great-grandchildren, Will and Sam Oliver, J. W. Jackson, Ivy Stephens, Oren and Elam Stewart, and Cameron Barnes; the beloved Culbreth family including three step-children, eight step-grandchildren, and three step-great-grandchildren; other dearly loved family members to include sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a host of wonderful friends.
Serving as active and honorary pallbearers will be the Deacons of the Southside Baptist Church.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Covenant Hospice and to each individual caregiver for their loving care and kindness.
