Larry Edward Chafin, Sr., born 23 April 1942, passed away peacefully 29 May 2024, surrounded by his loving family, in Dothan, AL. at the age of 82. Larry shared 56 wonderful years with his beloved wife, Laura, who stood by every chapter of their shared story. Together, they raised three wonderful children; Libby (Tim) Bragg, Philip (Tava) Chafin and Larry, Jr. (Sharon) Chafin, who then blessed them with cherished grandchildren Rachael (Justin), Christian, Dakota, Nevaeh, Nicole, Andrew and Sophia. Larry Sr. Is survived by his dear wife Laura, sister Jackie Chafin-Byrd and many nieces and nephews. Larry Sr. was preceded in death by parents Rev. John and Hazel Chafin, siblings, John Chafin Jr., Charlotte (Lee) Walker, Little Vera Chafin and his in-laws, Rev. AB and Catherine Martin, Phillip Martin, Lyne Dorminy, Lee Walker and Dean Byrd. Along with beloved family pets Gidgett, and Miko de Gallo Chafin, Larry Sr. is welcomed into heaven with open arms.

Larry Sr. proudly served his country in the United States Navy for 22 years as an Electronics Technician. Working on nearly anything electrical ranging from simple circuits to Top Secret radar and electronic warfare systems, Larry Sr. was a master of his craft. After retirement, Larry Sr. attended Wallace Community College, even attending some classes with his daughter, Libby, while earning an Associates Degree. His second career was at the United States Post Office on Oates Street, where he brought a smile to the face of everyone he met. A commitment to a life of service was a passion for Larry Sr., demonstrated by a decade of volunteer work at Southeast Health CCU, dressing up as Santa Clause for children, and delivering plate lunches during the holidays to those away from their families. His work ethic was indominable, and he was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Larry Sr. had a vast set of interests, that were only matched by his colorful personality. An unstoppable jokester with an eternal smile, Sr. was always ready to over-engineer anything, engage in a game of cards or share a piece of candy from a seemingly endless supply of fireballs and peppermints. Larry Sr. exuded a sense of purpose and positivity. He was an avid reader, immensely enjoyed the outdoors, relished devotion with the Breakfast Guys and enthusiastically pursued adventure. Even moments of rest could be fanciful, as it was not uncommon to find Larry Sr. napping in unpredictable places under tables, chairs and behind couches. Those who knew and loved Sr. describe him as intelligent, adventurous, wise, and sometimes mischievous.

Larry Sr. brought light and guidance to those around him, with his greatest dedication to his beloved Laura. Often spotted holding hands and always affectionate, Larry Sr. and Laura provided a wonderful example of everlasting commitment and love in marriage. Traveling the world, growing together in good times and in bad, Mr. & Mrs. Chafin made the most of every moment they shared. Laura will forever be grateful she was working at the Sears Candy Counter all those years ago and will cherish the life she and Larry Sr. built together in love.

A special thanks from the Chafin family go out to Dr. Camilo Gomez, Dr. Walter J. Doty III, Dr. Victoria Phillips, and Dr. Joshua Bentley for their expert level of care that provided additional years with Larry Sr. that might otherwise have not been possible. Additionally, to our much-loved caretakers Malvia and Nastasia who became like family – thank you! Lastly, sincere appreciation to Carewell Home Health Services, and Gentiva Hospice; we could never thank you enough for the level of care and compassion shown to Larry Sr. and our family.

As we say goodbye to a man who was so much to so many, we take comfort in the knowledge that his legacy will live on through the lives he touched and the love he shared. A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. Larry Edward Chafin, Sr. will be deeply missed, yet his spirit will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. Rest in peace, and thank you for the laughter, love, and legacy left behind.
