COLUMBIA…Larry M. Hipps (Staff Sergeant, U.S. Army, Retired), a former resident of Columbia, passed away late Wednesday afternoon, May 27, 2020, in Extendicare Health & Rehabilitation Center. He was 77.
Graveside services, with military honors, will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, May 30, 2020, in the Columbia City Cemetery with Pastor Vann Cooley officiating. The family will receive friends following the graveside service. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Columbia, P.O. Box 267 Columbia, AL 36319.
Mr. Hipps was born in South Carolina, son of the late John Floyd Hipps and Lois Brashier Hipps. At an early age, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served his country during the Vietnam War era. Larry retired with the rank of Staff Sergeant after twenty years of service. While in the military, he received the National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with One Oak Leaf Cluster, Overseas Service Medal (Korea) and several other military ribbons and medals. Larry was also an expert pistol marksman. He was a proud member of the AMVETS 78 and had served as Post Commander in Valparaiso, FL. Larry enjoyed carpentry, woodworking, crafts and reading. After retirement, he was employed by U.S. Civil Service at Eglin AFB, Florida. Larry was a member of the First Baptist Church of Columbia. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Holly Ann Hipps, a son, Michael Hipps, and two brothers, Jerry Hipps and David Hipps.
Surviving relatives include two daughters, Shannon Sutton (Tim), Parrish, FL; and Michelle Nowell, Florida; a son, Matthew Hipps (Brenda), Michigan; two sisters, Marilyn Rogers (Vann), Columbia; and Barbara Blizzard (Bruce), Plantation, FL; a brother, Alvis Hipps (Annette), Johnston, SC; sisters-in-law, Mary Hipps, Florida; and Rita Hipps, Tennessee; 12 grandchildren including a special granddaughter, Cheyanne Hipps Horton; two great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dogwood Manor in Abbeville and Extendicare Health & Rehabilitation, Dr. Donovan Wewers and Dr. J.E. Morris, III for the excellent care and compassion shown to Larry during his illness.
