Graveside services will be held at Gardens of Memory Cemetery at 10:30 am on Saturday, May 20, 2023. A celebration of Larry’s life will be held at 12:30 pm on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at Evergreen Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Joe Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday from 11:30-12:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to The Herring Houses of Dothan, 101 N. Herring St., Dothan, AL 36303.
Larry Rudolph Kirkland, Jr., a loving son, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away on Friday, May 12, 2023, in his hometown of Dothan, Alabama. Born on April 29, 1965, Larry was known for his intelligence, adventurous spirit, and selfless dedication to helping others in his community.
Larry was the cherished son of Aloma Killingsworth and Larry Rudolph Kirkland, Sr., and the devoted brother to April Kirkland Stansberry and her husband, Mike, and uncle to his niece, Skylar Tucker. He also leaves behind his beloved Uncle Ron Givens and his wife Pat, his Aunt Aquilla Kirkland Mims, and many cousins who will miss him dearly. Larry was predeceased by his loving stepfather, Doug Killingsworth, Sr., who was the dad to Larry that he did not have to be, his stepbrother, Doug Killingsworth, Jr. and his Aunt Alayne Smith.
A proud graduate of Houston Academy in 1983, Larry went on to attend Birmingham Southern and the University of Alabama Birmingham, where he earned his medical degree in 1991. He also attended the University of South Carolina, where he received his Master’s in Public Health. A lifelong learner, Larry was a big history buff and received his minor in history.
For more than 15 years, Tom Butcher served as a mentor and as Larry’s AA sponsor. In 2007, Larry and Aloma founded The Herring Houses of Dothan, Alabama, an intervention facility where he devoted his life to helping people with addictions in his community. Starting with just seven clients, the Herring Houses now serve more than 37 clients, and Larry’s work was featured in Dothan Magazine. He also worked on the surgical team with Dr. DeBakey, making a difference in countless lives.
Larry had a passion for traveling, especially to Europe and England. His vast knowledge of history and culture made him a wonderful tour guide, sharing his love of exploration with friends and family. A faithful member of Evergreen Presbyterian Church, Larry’s faith guided him throughout his life and inspired his service to others. He was a member of Dothan Rotary Club, and the Boys and Girls Club. Larry never missed an opportunity to cheer on the Alabama Crimson Tide.

As the great poet Maya Angelou once said, "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Larry’s intelligent, adventurous, and selfless nature leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion that will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Larry’s family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the countless friends, colleagues, and community members who have offered their support and love during this difficult time. Through their continued commitment to carrying on Larry’s mission of helping others, his memory will live on in the hearts and lives of those he touched.
Rest in peace, Larry Rudolph Kirkland, Jr. Your life was a testament to the power of love, service, and the indomitable human spirit.
