Retired Dothan FD Sergeant Laurence R. Long, 73, was called home after his 10 year battle with cancer, at his home, surrounded by his family and friends, on Thursday, February 1, 2018. Larry was born August 3, 1944, in Bloomington IL, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Forrest E. Long Sr.
Larry is also preceded in death by one brother, Forrest E. Long Jr. of Avon Park, FL.
Survived by Beverly J. (Ellis) Long of Cowarts, AL, three sons Navy Commander Brian S. Long(Audrey) of Prattville, AL, Defense Logistics Agency Police Officer Richard L. Long(Dana) of Turlock, CA, and Master Carpenter/Cabinetry James(JimBob) R. Long of Cowarts, AL, five grandchildren (Jenni, Ryan, Hallie, Keelei, Corbin) and five great-grandchildren (Marshall, Kaylyn, Jackson, Bentley, Kainoa). Brothers Edwards D. Long(Emilie) and Thomas D. Long(Sharon). Several nieces and nephews.
He was a 1964 graduate of McLean-Waynesville HS, McLean IL. Drafted into the Army, 1967, serving two years in the Korean War, discharged December 14, 1969. They moved to Cowarts, 1971, starting his career as a Father, Houston County Sherriff’s Reserve Deputy, Part-Time Truck Driver with Twitchell and Dothan Fire Fighter where he was lovingly given the nickname “Cowboy.” After retiring from the Dothan Fire Department as a Sargent ENG, March 4, 1995 (21 years) they enjoyed years of RV and Bluegrass life. Most recently Larry drove for Ag-Spray of Dothan, just for Bluegrass trip money.
Larry had a full and adventured life on earth and was rich beyond measure with friends. He loved God, his family, bluegrass music, and helping others. He was welcomed wherever he walked, never met a stranger, and will be missed by all.
