With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Lavelle Crews Mickelsen, 77, cherished and devoted mother and grandmother, a much-loved wife, sister, and friend. She left a lasting legacy of love, Christian example, and a heart for serving on September 12, 2020, after an eight-day battle with double pneumonia related to covid-19.

A wonderful mom to Debra Mickelsen, Samson, AL; Lisa Milam (Philip), a proud grandmother to Tyler and Austin Driggers and Chelsea Mickelsen, all of Atlanta, beloved sister of Royce Crews (Sirenna) and Rochelle Crews Grace Wright (Henry), both of Samson; and Annie Crews Sanders (Sanford, FL); sister-in-law Sharon Mickelsen Klein of Owatonna, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews, Lavelle is deeply loved and missed by all.

Born in Samson, Alabama and a graduate of Samson High School, she married the love of her life, Robert E. Mickelsen, in 1962 and traveled with him to several states with his work assignments. They made many lasting friends as they moved from California, Utah, Minnesota, Texas, North and South Carolina, and when they retired to Samson, Alabama. She was a passionate and devoted Bama Fan.

She was a very active member of Samson Methodist Church. She was famous in Piney Grove for whirling and spinning in the kitchen, cooking (everyone who knew her especially loved her dumplings and pound cakes), knitting, canning and freezing harvests from the farm, working the polls, earning her Black Belt in shopping with Rochelle, playing Dominoes and Rumi Cube, and traveling. She had a vivacious personality, a huge heart, and loved to laugh. Never an unkind word about anyone ever passed her lips.

She did not walk alone into the arms of her Lord. She was accompanied by her parents, Dotson & Kate Crews, of Samson, and her in-laws, Elmer & Florence Mickelsen, of Staples, Minnesota.

Her life was a living example of the Proverbs 31 woman, especially verse 30, “Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain; but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.”

A celebration of life service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 7, 2020 at Samson First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dean Moore officiating.

Donations may be made in her memory to Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, John H. Day Road, Samson, AL.
