Mrs. Corley was born in West Point, Georgia and lived all her life in Dothan. “Lady LaVetta”, as she was affectionately called by friends, inspired and encouraged others through her poetry and writings over the years; from her Dothan High Class poem of 1934, to her books, A LIFETIME OF RHYME, and A RIGHT PLACE FOR VIOLET. Her local histories and poems in Poetic Destiny Review, and cards and letters were a delight and comfort. She touched many lives during her years as lunchroom worker and manager at Highlands, Rose Hill and Southside Elementary Schools in Dothan. LaVetta was a member of New Life Church. She loved her family, her friends and Jesus. LaVetta ran her race well and left an incredible mark. LaVetta was preceded in death by parents, Earl Menefee Tatum, Sr. and Esther Williams Tatum, her husband, James Cecil Corley, a sister, Virginia Weeks, and two grandchildren, Robbie Kaiser, and Shelley Ziegler.
Surviving relatives include three daughters, Sybil Corley Pharr (Leonard), Dothan; Mary E. Prosper (Charles), Bacliff, Texas; Virginia Jane Page (Carl), Campbellton, FL; three sons, Reverend Jim Corley (Sue); and Dan Corley (Ronda), all of Dothan; John Ziegler (Dorothy), Montgomery; a brother, Earl Tatum, Jr. (Betty), Chester, VA; fifteen grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
