Lawrence Blackwell Starr, age 76, went home to be with his heavenly Father on April 18, 2022 passing with peace and surrounded by his family.
He was born in Savannah, Georgia and moved to Jacksonville, Florida as a child. He graduated from the University of Florida and subsequently joined the US Army serving as a 1st Lieutenant in Korea.
Moving his family to Jasper, Georgia in 1979, he worked for the Georgia Marble Company in Tate for 20 years before finishing his career as the Executive Director of Community Assistance Resources Emergency Services (CARES) in Pickens County.
During his more than 40 years of community engagement in Pickens, Larry was actively involved in civic organizations, youth sports, student mentorship, Royal Ambassadors and global mission work. He served God as a Sunday school teacher, deacon and elder and was an active member of Mountain View Community Church.
Larry is survived by his wife of 48 years, Barbara Joyce Pitchford Starr; daughter, Krista Starr Williams and husband, David; daughter, Jenny Starr Jones and husband, Jeff; son, Paul Pitchford Starr and wife, Heather; grandchildren, Dakota Williams, Micah Lawrence and Caroline Jones, Haley, James and Olivia Starr. Larry is also survived by his brothers and sister-in-law, Ralph Starr Jr., David Starr, and Phillip and Nancy Starr.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph Hardman Starr Sr., Virginia Blackwell Starr and Irene Avera Starr.
Funeral Services will be held 3:30 p.m., Thursday, April 21, 2022 in the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home, Jasper, Georgia, with Reverend John Lagana and Reverend Ed Pottorff officiating.
Graveside services will be held at 3:00 P.M. (CDT) Saturday, April 23, 2022, in the Haleburg Cemetery, Haleburg, Alabama with Dr. Ray Cobb officiating. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CARES, (Community Assistance Resources Emergency Services) PO Box 1342; Jasper, Georgia 30143.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Staff of Roper Funeral Home and Crematory in Jasper, Georgia and Holman Headland Mortuary in Headland, Alabama.
