OZARK…. Leemon H. “Dick” Tharpe, a resident of Ozark, died Saturday morning, March 10, 2018 in Dothan. He was 92.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, 2018 in the Earl Bankston Memorial Chapel of Fuqua Bankston Funeral Home with Rev. David Walsh officiating. Burial will follow in Post Oak Baptist Church cemetery under the direction of Fuqua Bankston Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the donor’s choice.
Mr. Tharpe was born August 4, 1925, in Barbour County, Alabama, son of the late Leemon H. Tharpe and Maudie Chandler Tharpe. He moved to Ozark at an early age and was a veteran of WWII, serving the US Army in Japan. Mr. Tharpe worked at Ft. Rucker as a helicopter mechanic. He enjoyed playing music -- guitar, piano and violin and also enjoyed gardening and being outdoors, hunting and fishing. He retired from the Dale County Road & Bridge Department. In his earlier years he was previously employed by Phillips Van-Heusen in Ozark. Mr. Tharpe attended Post Oak Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-eight years Bertie Clyde Free Tharpe; daughter, Robbie Lynn Eldridge; two sisters: Mildred Outlaw and Edna Cheek; three brothers: Samuel Tharpe, James Harold Tharpe, and Julian Tharpe.
Survivors include one daughter, Sandra Deal (Warde) of Birmingham, AL; one sister, Grace Miller, of Ozark; and one sister-in-law, Ruth Tharpe, of Ozark; two grandchildren: Christopher Eldridge (Tiffany) and Brian Eldridge (Joesette); five great-grandchildren: Colton Eldridge, Savannah Eldridge, Gabriel Eldridge, Mathew Eldridge, and Madyson Eldridge; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Warde Deal, Allen Tharpe, Wilton Outlaw, Mackey Whitman, Christopher Eldridge and Brian Eldridge.
