SHORTERVILLE, AL…, Leila Joy Gissendaner, a resident of Shorterville, passed away early Thursday morning, May 19, 2022, at a Dothan hospital. She was 97.
Graveside services will be held 11:00 A.M. Friday, May 20, 2022, at Shorterville Baptist Church Cemetery with Reverend Joey Hudspeth officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Wright Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.
Flowers will be accepted, or contributions may be made to the Shorterville Baptist Church Cemetery Fund or to a favorite charity.
Mrs. Gissendaner was born in Hawkinsville, Georgia to the late James Eligh Childers and Effie Henrietta Hill Rooks. She has lived around Shorterville most of her life. She attended High School and later received her license in cosmetology from Sparks Community College. She was a member of Shorterville Baptist Church. Mrs. Gissendaner also worked for several years at West Point Pepperell as a sewing machine operator. After that, she was employed as the activity’s director at Fort Gaines Nursing Home for many years until she retired. She moved to Henry County Health and Rehab in 2017, where she was crowned Ms. Henry County Health and Rehab that same year.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Willie Gene Gissendaner, a grandson, Jay Scott Nolin and stepfather Fred Rooks, Sr.
Leaving to cherish her memories are her daughters, Jean Littlefield (John) and Cheryl Moody (John) both of Shorterville,AL; her brothers, Fred Rooks of Miami, Florida, and Jack Rooks (Judy) of Aurora, Colorado; her grandchildren, Keith Stinson (Angie), Kim Johnson (Steve), Kevin Nolin (Gracie), Todd Nolin (Peggy), Amy Jones (Chris), Jean Carter (Joe), Bob Littlefield (Louise), James Littlefield (Leah), Steve Littlefield (Keri); twelve great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; numerous other family members and friends.
Serving as active pallbearers will be her grandsons.
