Lena Frances, the first child of Minnie B. Smith McCuller & R. D. McCuller was born November 10, 1942, in Houston County. She passed away Sunday, December 31, 2023, at Southeast Health following an extended illness, with her family by her side at the age of 81.


Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at Grant Chapel A.M.E. Church (418 7th Avenue, Ashford), with Reverend Timothy Holmes and Reverend Robert Earl Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Jerusalem C.M.E. Church Cemetery (Gordon) with Glover Funeral Home Directing. The family will receive friends at the church from 11:00 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday prior to the service.


Flowers will be accepted.


Lena was a product of the Houston County School System, graduating from Ashford Colored High School. She attended Daniel Alexander Payne College in Birmingham for two years, she then transferred to Alabama State University in Montgomery, where she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education. Lena was a history enthusiast and loved teaching, tutoring, and engaging with her students and parents. She dedicated 34 years of service to teaching in Miller County, Georgia, and Houston County, Alabama. During her career, she received several awards and certificates for her exemplary service.


Lena absolutely loved her church family and was so excited about Sunday school and singing in the choir and was a proud and faithful lifetime member of Grant Chapel A.M.E. Church of Ashford. She served as Angel Choir Director, Sunday School Secretary, Senior Choir member, Steward, and a member of the Stewardess Board. Lena was a faithful member of her Local Lay Organization and supported her District, and Conference Lay Organization. She was also a member of the Melodious Chapter #107 Order of Eastern Star, Southeast Conference Branch of the Women’s Missionary Society – 9th Episcopal District of the A.M.E Church, a member of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, INC., and worked with the Houston County High School 4H for many years.


She leaves to cherish her memories, three sisters, Linda Alford of Dothan, Emma Parsons of  Cowarts, and Martha McCuller of Ashford; One brother, Benny Harold McCuller of Pansey; Nephews: Robert McCuller (Jeannette) of Okinawa, Japan, Marcus McCuller, Christopher Parsons of Dothan, and Harold Jamal Parsons (Amoy) of Norwich, CT; a special niece, Michelle Kinsey of Ashford; and a host of other relatives, friends, and a special friends of the family, William McGhee, Bellmye Johnson, and Kim Barber.


She was preceded in death by her parents, R.D. & Minnie B. McCuller, and a brother, Robert Wayne McCuller, very special aunts, the Smith Twins, Mary & Martha Smith, Leola Griffin Harris, Emma Fleming, and Mattie Ryus of Ashford; three uncles, James, Lonnie, and Phil Smith.
