Lena Vermell Hall Martin Sheppard, a life time resident of Dothan, Alabama passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Extendicare. She was 95.


Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at 4 pm in Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Terry Glover officiating. Burial will follow in Selma Baptist Church Cemetery with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 3-4 pm on Saturday prior to the service.


Mrs. Sheppard was born on September 14, 1922 in Wicksburg, Alabama and lived her early years in Napier Field, Alabama. She resided there until moving to the Memphis Church Community where she meet her first husband, Raymond Martin. Vermell was employed as a seamstress at the pajama factory, Warners and the hosiery mill. Loving the outdoors, she was an avid gardener and loved to fish. She was very out-going, she never met a stranger, and was a greeter at Morrison’s. Vermell was married to Raymond Mitchell “Hooks” Martin in 1939 until his untimely drowning at Lake Eufaula in 1968. Afterwards, she was married to Colin Sheppard until his passing in 1993.


She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, John Henry Hall (1860-1944) and Martha E. Holloway (1870-1946); her maternal grandparents, John L. Lewis (1870-1943) and Mattie L. Durden (1877-1910); her parents, Grady Melbourne Hall (1901-1970) and Lorena Lewis Hall (1902-1974); her brothers, Raymond Hall, Foy Hall, Johnny Hall, Hershall Hall and Edward Hall; and her sister, Merlene Yarbrough.


Survivors include sons, Larry Coleman (born in 1939) (Laura) Martin and Jerry Randolph (born in 1947) (Reta) Martin; her grandchildren, Mandy (B.J.) Cox, Missy (Jay) Mathis, Vanessa Ray Martin, Michael Martin and Beau (Leigh) Martin; her brothers, Eugene (Carolyn) Hall, Coy Lee (Rose) Hall and Damon (Deborah) Hall; a sister, Nadine Lease; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
