From a young age, he acquired a love for the land and making things grow. He used his knowledge to grow a variety of fruits and vegetables as well as orchids and award winning roses. LJ's passion for living things extended into raising cows, goats, bees, and chickens among other things. Upon retirement, he learned the art of flint knapping and turning wooden bowls, which he used to create beautiful artisan projects.

He was a founding member of the Southeast Alabama Orchid Society, he was a member of the Wiregrass Rose Society and a member of the Dothan Gem & Mineral Club and the Wiregrass Forge Blacksmith Club.
