Lewis DeVon Handgen, 80, of Chancellor, Alabama unexpectedly passed away the afternoon of November 12, 2015. Though his death was unexpected, he was doing what he loved most in life, being a part of the great outdoors riding on his ATV.
A memorial service to celebrate the life and work accomplishments of this well respected and loved father, grandfather, great grandfather, and husband will be held at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Enterprise. Lewis DeVon was a great provider to his family, instilling a strong work ethic to his children and grandchildren. He loved fishing in his ponds, and no project was too great for his creative mind.
He was born on January 30, 1935 to the late Edward A. and Vida L. (Bricker) Handgen, at his grandparent’s home in Oswego, Indiana. Born and raised in Kosiosko County, he was a graduate of the Leesburg High School Class of 1955. He is a former foreman of Schultz Mobile Homes, before following in the industrious steps of his father, mother, brother, and sister before him, creating his own businesses. Lewis Handgen was a self-made man, and in addition to working full time, began building homes as a side business, eventually creating a thriving excavating business - Handgen’s Excavating, and tree nursery – Handgen’s Nursery, well into his retirement years, with his wife, Anna, by his side.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two grandchildren: Diana Christine (in 2004) and Ryan Devon (in 1980).
He was twice married and is survived by his loving wife, Anna (Ride) Handgen of 33 years, and his first wife, Julia (Purvis) Munn. He is also survived by his sons and daughters; Kim Lynette, Kurt DeVon, Kelly Dee, Kristine Leigh, and Kevin; and thirteen grandchildren: Jaime Dee, Jeremy Sebastian, Elizabeth Kaye, Christopher DeVon, Jonathan Quinn, Tara Leigh, Alexandra DeVonne, Havilyn Kristine, Daniel Joel, Harrison Frank, Joseph Warren, and Ryan Matthew; as well as nine great-grandchildren: Anastasia, Kristina, Julia Bell, Maya, Stacey, Davis, Maddy, Theo, Ella, and Arlo. He also leaves behind his beloved sister, Vida Colleen Handgen, and her lifelong friend, Janet Hunter of Sarasota, Florida.
