Lewitt Shivers Wheelock, passed away peacefully at his home on April 27, 2024. He was born to Hugh Franklin Wheelock Sr. and Elizabeth Alston Wheelock on August 12, 1963, in Montgomery, AL, and moved to Dothan, AL, in 1964.
Lewitt was a charter member of the Vivian B. Adams School since 1971. He enjoyed attending school, being with his friends, and participating in archery. Lewitt participated in the Special Olympics for many years. He was also a member of Boy Scout Troop 126, where he made lifelong friends, worked towards merit badges, and loved to go to Camp AlaFlo.
A social butterfly is the best way to describe Lewitt. He enjoyed being around people, was known for his compassionate heart, and never met someone who stayed a stranger very long. His love for animals was evident if you were around him for even a little while. This included his horse "Siss," whom he enjoyed showing at open shows in Baker, FL. Showing horses was a favorite pastime he enjoyed with his sister Laurin. He would light up while working or riding horses.
Lewitt loved his family very much, and Laurin often got him to do things by telling him his mom or dad would have expected him to do it. He had a strong bond with his brother, Hugh, and the two of them were together their entire lives. Martha, their main caregiver and best friend, not only was part of the family, she also had the job of refereeing when brotherly competition and spirit would rear its head. But no matter what, their love for one another and for Referee Martha stood the test of time.
Lewitt’s love for his sister, Laurin, was strong and vibrant. He always wanted to give her a daily update on what was happening and needed to make sure that all the animals were okay down at Laurin’s place in Florida. He pretty much had her wrapped around his little finger. She would do whatever she could to see him smile and enjoy his day. She was his rock to the very end.
He enjoyed going to church at St. Matthias Anglican Church and loved visits from Fr. Stephen Miller, who spent much time visiting with him. Whenever Fr. Steve would talk about sports - usually Alabama football - too much, Lewitt would remind him to do “prayers!” This meant it was time to get back on task!
Lewitt was preceded in death by his mother and father and several aunts and uncles. He is survived by his brother Hugh F. Wheelock, Jr. of Dothan, his sister Laurin Wheelock of Crestview, FL, and numerous cousins.
Lewitt had a beautiful heart and a sweet disposition. Truly it would be a wonderful world if we had more like him around! To know Lewitt was to love him and he will be greatly missed. However, we can rejoice through this pain, knowing that Lewitt truly lived out this Scripture:“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the Faith.” (2 Timothy 4:7)
He truly was a light in this world filled with darkenss, but now he is enjoying Paradise with His Heavenly Father, and with his mom and dad.
