Lillie Ida Adkins Rutland


 


Lillie Ida Adkins Rutland, a resident of Dothan, died Saturday, December 15, 2012, at Extendicare Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was 94.


 


Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 18, 2012, at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Billy Gant officiating. Burial will follow in Dothan City Cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. until service time on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dothan Botanical Gardens, 5130 Headland Avenue, Dothan, AL 36303 or the Wiregrass Museum of Art, 126 Museum Avenue, Dothan, AL 36303. 


 


Mrs. Rutland was born in Marianna, FL, January 3, 1918, and lived her early life there.  She moved to Dothan at an early age and was a charter member of the First Baptist Church.  She graduated from Dothan High School, and attended Montevallo University.  She completed the course of study with the American Art Institute.  She was a renowned artist.  One of her paintings, The First Snow and Wild Flowers, is part of a permanent collection in the Governor’s Mansion.  She worked at Ft. Rucker with civil service as an illustrator, and painted the strategic air commands and flight plans.  She was a member of the Wiregrass Art League.


 


She was predeceased by her husbands John Adkins, former Dothan Mayor and Ray Rutland, son John Rainey Adkins, and great grandson Joshua Adkins.


 


Survivors include her children; David (Laura) Adkins of Dothan, Patti Rutland (Bret) Simpson of Dothan; grandchildren, Traci Adkins (John) Wingate, Derek Adkins, Tara Adkins (Jason) Reiley, and Kevin Scott; great grandchildren, Taylor Wingate, Sydney Wingate, Sam Simpson, and Eli Simpson.  Great great grandchildren, Slade Reiley and Lila Reiley.


 


Active pallbearers will be, Frank Tanton, Jason Reiley, John Wingate, Ed Bright, John Weaver, and Lamar Miller.
