On December 30, 2016, the soul of Lottie Sconyers left this earth. She had been living in Columbus, Georgia, where her daughter, Sandra, lovingly cared for her and was with her when she passed. Born in 1927, Lottie was the daughter of Lottie Brackin Hodges and Chester L. Hodges. Her husband, Max C. Sconyers, Sr., preceded her in death. Max and Lottie shared many accomplishments in life. At the core of their lives together was pride and love for their children. Once when asked how she could love so many children she replied, “… honey love doesn’t divide. It multiplies.” She was 89. She was a beloved and generous mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
Before marriage she attended the University of Alabama. Max and Lottie lived in Headland, AL where Max worked for the Auburn Experiment Station. Lottie was the backbone of a farm family, working endless hours in the home. She drove a tractor when needed, made biscuits by the dozens and woke before dawn to sew for her children. Many who knew her then remember her sitting at the piano, fingers flying, playing the “Boogie Woogie.”
Later the family moved to Cary, NC and from North Carolina, Max’s career took the family to Vero Beach, FL. In Vero Lottie expressed a range of creative talents in the restoration of a large old home. Known for her sense of design, she was an active member of the Garden Club winning multiple design awards. After retirement, Max and Lottie moved to Ozark, AL, where they sought a home for gathering of their large family in the peace and quite of the rural South. No matter where the family lived Lottie’s skill in the kitchen was a source of pride.
Her children survive her: Brenda Sconyers and husband Jerry Snow; granddaughter Austin and husband Brandon Olson, and grandson French. Pamela Brown; granddaughter Jessi and husband Josh Herr, great-grandchildren Jasper and Josie. Marcia and husband Tony Andruzzi; grandson Drew and wife Meghan, great-grandchildren Brandt and Isabella and granddaughter Elisa. Sandra and husband Donald Lupo; grandchildren Gavin and his great-grandchildren: Keara, Ayla and Conner, and grandson Iain. Max, Jr. (Chip); granddaughter, Melissa and husband Brandon Tucker, great-granddaughter Madison, and grandson Max III (Trey) and wife MacKenzie. Thomas and wife Mia; and grandson Bryce. Michele and husband Brian Jenkins; grandson Tyler and his fiancé Chrissy Alford and granddaughter Sydney.
She is survived by her sisters, Joan Harris and Kathryn Bachmann, and by her brother James Hodges and his wife Esther. Her brother Shelton, and sister Oneita Shirah preceded her. Beyond her immediate family noted here, Mrs. Sconyers has been loved and supported by close-knit loving cousins and extended family.
Services for Mrs. Sconyers will be held at the Blackwood Community Church (429 County Road 44, Headland, AL) on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at Noon. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10:00 AM to Noon and the family invites guests to join them for light lunch in the fellowship hall at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks to please consider a donation to the Blackwood Church, originally founded in 1894 as the Blackwood Congregational Church by Mrs. Sconyers great-grandfather, Josiah Brackin. Donations can be sent to Blackwood Church, 751 Country Road 576, Headland, AL 36345.
