HEADLAND. . .Sarah Louise Tyler Bulger was known to many in Headland as the “Butterfly Lady.” Each year she set out milkweed plants for Monarch and Swallowtail butterflies to lay eggs and nurtured them through their development into adults. It was a labor of love prompted by her concern over reports of a shrinking population of pollinating insects. She died peacefully, November 5, 2021, at her Headland home, which was filled with butterfly artifacts.
She was born Sarah Louise Tyler on January 23, 1922, in Clayhatchee, Alabama, to Aaron and Nora Tyler. As the third daughter of a farming family, she grew up helping tend the crops. During the depression years, she found work through the National Youth Authority. In 1945, she met and married U. S. Army Sergeant Bill Bulger, just returned from combat duty in Europe. Later, her husband joined the Air Force and she became a military wife, raising three children as the family was transferred around the country. When he retired from the Air Force in 1966, they moved to Orlando, Florida, where both were active in church and community activities. She worked at Burdine’s Department Store in Orlando managing the Toy Department and also served as President of her local Garden Club.
In 1992, they decided Orlando had become too crowded and returned to their roots, settling in Headland. Their flower beds soon received recognition with “Yard of the Month” honors, as they again became active in church and community work. After her husband’s death in 2012, she maintained the flower beds until health issues made that impossible. She was a lifelong cat lover, caring for several that lived long beyond normal feline lifespans.
Sarah Louise Bulger was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, parents, Aaron and Nora Tyler, sisters Ella Foy Johnson and Annie Laura Rabon, and brothers James Harold Tyler and Ralph Dowling Tyler, daughter-in-law, Diane Bulger and son-in-law, Thomas Tucker
Surviving relatives include two daughters, Delores Tucker of Florence, South Carolina and Debbie Holman (Russell) of Headland, a son, Bill Bulger, Roswell, Georgia; granddaughters, Pamela Mount (Steve) of Florence, South Carolina, Cathy Rice (Andy) of Hoover, Alabama, and Michelle Mabery (James) of Atlanta, a step-grandson, Dr. Russ Holman, Birmingham; and five great-grandchildren, Sarah Mount, Tucker Mount, Tucker Rice, Liam Rice and Nora Kate Rice.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, November 7, 2021, in the Holman-Headland Mortuary Chapel with Reverend Misty Barrett and Chaplain Kevin Kelly officiating. Burial will follow in the Headland Methodist Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Sunday at the mortuary. Social distancing and mask guidelines will be observed.
