Lowell Mandeville Dennis died February 14, 2013. He was 98 years of age.


 


Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church, Dothan, AL on Saturday, February 16, 2013 with Reverend Bob Gross officiating and Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing. Interment will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery.


The family will receive friends at First Baptist Church from 1:00 to 2:00 pm Saturday, February 16, 2013 with services to follow. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Dothan.


Lowell was born in Dothan, A. on April 15, 1914, the third child of Marl and Bertha Pitts Dennis. He graduated from Dothan High School in 1933. While there, he lettered in football, basketball and track. Lowell attended Auburn University (API)) and graduated in 1942. His college years were interrupted by illness (Typhoid fever); then working in Washington, D.C., with the Dept of Agriculture, Cotton Division.


Lowell fought in the European theater of WWII. He served as Captain and maintenance officer for the 497th Armored Field Artillery Battalion of the 13th Armored Division, within General Patton’s Army.


During the war he saw action in the Rhine and Ruhr Pocket theaters of Europe. After VE Day he was transported to prepare fro the attack on the Japanese mainland along the west shore of Tokyo Bay. He continued to serve his country in the Army Reserve, attaining the rank of Lt. Colonel.


After retiring from the army, Lowell owned and operated Poyner Seed Company and David Superette. He then returned to Federal Civil Service with the Army Reserve Program and retired in 1984.


Lowell married Rosa Lee Young on October 16, 1949 and was married 60 years before her death in October 2009. Lowell and Rosa Lee lived in Dothan until 2006, when they moved to Birmingham to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Lowell was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church, Dothan and was a member of the Chapel Sunday School Class.


Lowell is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law: Dr. Rodney L. Dennis (Toni), Dr. Bradley Y. Dennis (Krista), David M. Dennis (Katrina), all of Birmingham, and Gary Dennis (Jerri), Belize, two daughters: Adrea Dennis Brown, Lindsay Dennis Johnson. Lowell is also survived by two brothers George Dennis (Louise) of Dothan, Rayford Dennis (Posey) Macon, GA; grandchildren; Alan (Melinda) Austin (Casey), Stephen, Kevin, Leah, Jacob, Nathan Dennis, Christi Mitchell (David), Michael Carroccino (Kristen), Jeanie Brown Miesch (Bill), Cliff Brown, Jr., Millie Johnson Reddick (Bill), Drew Johnson (Amy), great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and cousins.


 


Lowell was preceded in death by his parents, Marl and Bertha Pitts Dennis, his wife, Rosa Lee Dennis, a sister, Bobbie Dennis Sullivan.
