Loyal Lon Applegate


Loyal Lon Applegate, a resident of Dothan, passed away Saturday, May 5, 2012, at Flowers Hospital. He was 84.


Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at the First Assembly of God Church in Dothan, with Rev. Murray D. Kelley officiating. Interment with Naval Military Honors will follow at 2:30 p.m. CDT in Lakeview Memory Gardens in Phenix City, AL with Byrd Funeral Home on West Main directing. The family will receive friends at the church from 9:00 a.m. Tuesday until service time.


Mr. Applegate was born January 12, 1928, in Augusta, KS. He entered the U.S. Navy at age 17. Following his military discharge, he attended college in Wichita, KS. Mr. Applegate was employed with Ling Temco Vaught for a number of years and later with the Trinity River Authority in Arlington, TX for 20 years prior to his retirement. After retirement, he moved to Dothan in 1997, where he lived the remainder of his life. While in Arlington, he served his church as a Bible quiz teacher, Sunday school teacher, and Church Treasurer. He also served in many of the same capacities at Evangel Temple in Dothan. Mr. Applegate was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He enjoyed playing Mexican Train (dominoes) and exercising on his treadmill. He and his wife enjoyed assisting the sick and shut-in within their families and their church family. Mr. Applegate was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Dothan.


Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Moseley Bernhard Applegate, Dothan; two sons, Steve Bernhard (Phyllis), Fernandina Beach, FL, and Gregory Applegate, Tell City, IN; two daughters, Cindy McCraw (Randy), Alvarado, TX, and Debbbie Rivers (Bobby), Lakeland, FL; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; two brothers, Marvin and Ches Applegate; three sisters, Bea Smith, Lee Oller, and Liz Wagner.
