COLUMBIA. . .LTC Walter Hope Bryan, USAF (Ret), a resident of Columbia, died early Saturday evening, January 9, 2016, at his home. He was 91.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, January 12, 2016, in the First Baptist Church of Columbia with Reverend Joey Hudspeth officiating. Graveside services, with military honors, will follow in the Columbia City Cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. Tuesday in the parlor of the First Baptist Church.

Mr. Bryan was born and reared in Columbia, son of the late Frank Abram Bryan, Sr. and Mary Hope Koerber Bryan. He was a 1942 graduate of Houston County High School in Columbia and also attended Marion Military Institute. Mr. Bryan voluntarily joined the U. S. Navy December 12, 1942 and served his country in the Navy during World War II. In 1948, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and later served in the U. S. Air Force in the Korean War, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the Vietnam War era. Mr. Bryan retired from the U. S. Air Force in October, 1974 as a Lt. Colonel and as Deputy Commander of the 908th Tactical Air Group. He served as a fighter pilot and flew the P-51 Mustang in 101 combat missions during the Korean War. During his combat service in Korea he was recognized for his military service with the following medals awarded: Distinguished Flying Cross- 1 Cluster, Bronze Star, Air Medal-7, Air Force Commendation Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award along with many others. After retirement from the military, he was employed as the Post Master and later as a rural mail carrier in the Columbia Post Office. He was also involved in farming all his adult lifetime in the operation of Good Hope Farms. Mr. Bryan was a member of the First Baptist Church of Columbia and the American Legion. He was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Abram Bryan, Jr.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Catherine Sanders Bryan; a daughter, Hope Bryan McCrory (Mark), Gallatin, TN; two sons, Frank Bryan, III (Diane), Dothan; and Kenneth Bryan, Columbia; five grandchildren, Caroline McCrory, Jacob McCrory, Matthew Bryan (Kellan), Zachary Bryan and Joshua Bryan; two great-grandchildren, Cooper Bryan and Carson Bryan.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Billy Lanford, Wally Hinesley, Mark McCrory, Jacob McCrory, Pete Lee and Mike Hornsby.
