Lucy was born in East Brewton, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her husband, Don Klingel; parents, Claudia and Sennie Capshaw; sisters, Claudine Starrett, Julia Ivey, Patsy Skipper, and brother, Hershel Capshaw. Her surviving siblings are Jimmy Capshaw (Kitty), JoAnn Spencer, Cynthia Post, and sister-in-law, Vonzene Hand-Capshaw, of Geneva, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Lucy grew up in Geneva, AL and graduated from Geneva High School in 1947. She was employed with Phillip Van Heusen in Geneva prior to moving to Atlanta, Georgia in 1963. In Atlanta, she attended and graduated from Marsh Draughon Business College.
Lucy was a trailblazer in her career, procuring a prestigious position with Coca-Cola Company in Atlanta, Ga at a time when women were not commonly found in high-ranking positions. She enjoyed a 26-year career with Coca-Cola and was the first female to hold a position as a Drawback Specialist. She worked closely with US Customs and was in charge of sugar imports. Lucy spoke often of her love for her coworkers and the many lasting friendships she made.
Although Lucy had no children of her own, she was a mother figure and considered a second mom to many who knew her. Her nurturing spirit and kindness touched the lives of so many. She generously opened her home for family members and exchange students alike who were making transitions in their lives.
Not only was Lucy a caregiver to her family, she was also a generous friend who would spend hours upon hours on the phone, helping others solve their problems. Her selflessness and compassion touched the lives of many and will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be remembered for her big heart and desire to help others.
Lucy was a woman of strong faith, whose devotion to her beliefs were unwavering throughout her life. She was a member of Mt. Paran Church in Atlanta and taught Sunday School for many years. Lucy was truly an angel on this earth and often uplifted her family and friends by sharing her favorite bible verses.
Lucy leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness and faith. She was beautiful inside and out and completely selfless. Rest in peace, dear Lucy. Your memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of those you have touched. Your spirit will live on in the lives of those who were blessed to know you.
