Lucille Powell Sweatt passed away on Saturday, January 6, 2018. She was 93 years old. Mrs. Sweatt was born on November 2, 1924 to the late James A. Powell and Vallie Staff Powell. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ernest E. “Bill” Sweatt. Mr. Sweatt was a member of the United States Air Force, so they had an opportunity to live in many different parts of the world, including 35 years in Panama City. After Mr. Sweatt passed, Mrs. Sweatt moved back to her old home place in Holmes County.
She was a graduate of Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina with a major in Bible and a minor in Education. During her college years, she spent her summers working for the Baptist Home Mission Board in New Mexico. After her husband’s death, she had a small mission built for the Tlapaneous Indians in Mexico to honor his memory.
She was a faithful member of Grace Baptist Church in Panama City. She was a public school teacher for 45 years. She was the first teacher hired to teach Bible in the Bay County School System. She taught ten years for the United States Air Force in England during which time she was given a Sustained Superior Performance Rating. In 1961, she had an active part in the World Congress of Parents and Teachers in Germany.
Services for Mrs. Sweatt will be held on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home in Geneva, Alabama with Pastor Mike Jones officiating. Interment will follow at Sweet Gum Head Cemetery with Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home of Geneva directing.
