Luther Joel Smith

Luther Joel Smith, a resident of Newton, passed away Sunday, July 17, 2022 at Flowers Hospital. He was 61 years old.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11 am on Wednesday July 20, 2022 in Sunset Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends from 10:30 am to service time.

Joel was born February 14, 1961 in Dothan, Alabama. He attended Wicksburg High School and worked as a farmer in his earlier years before going to Louisiana to work off shore on an oil rig. Before going off shore Joel met and married a special lady, Tonya Sheffield. He worked off shore for many years before returning to Wicksburg as a farmer and then later worked with his brother, Todd, making docks at Lake Eufaula. Joel enjoyed gardening, woodworking, and using his handy skills helping others.

He is preceded in death by his father, Luther Smith; and his niece Kristie Brazell Metcalf.

He is survived by his mother, Robbie Smith Brown; his siblings, Imogene (Kenneth) Segars, Travis Wayne (Sue) Smith, Ferri (Mark) Hall, Todd (Tammy) Smith, and Donald Ray (Donna) Smith; his nephews, Chris Speigner and Jody Smith; his great nephews, Luther Dewayne Brazell, Kenneth Dylan Brazell, and Jack Tyler Metcalf; his great nieces, Savannah Marie Speigner, Millie Kay Smith, Londa Brooke Smith, Susanne Saxton Smith, Marley Camille Paulk, and Harlie RayAnn Romine.
