Lynn Epps was born in Selma, AL, on December 20, 1948. She was the daughter of the late Billy D. Thomas and Hattie Fowlkes Thomas. Her family moved to Dothan, where Lynn attended public school, graduating from Dothan High School in 1967. Joining First Methodist Church in Dothan as a child, Lynn was active throughout her school years in worship, Sunday School, and youth activities. She attended the University of Alabama and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology in 1971. Honored to be a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Fraternity for her outstanding scholastic achievement, Lynn was also a member of Delta Gamma social sorority.
On August 19, 1971, Lynn Thomas was married to J. Walker Epps, in the Chapel at First United Methodist Church in Dothan. They have celebrated over fifty years of marriage. Immediately following their honeymoon, Lynn and Walker drove to Boston, Massachusetts, where she worked as the mail clerk in the Boston University School of Theology, as her husband earned his seminary degree in theology. Lynn was blessed to be the mother of two children, who survive her. Ellise Lynn Ryan lives on the same block in Headland, and has been a constant help and support. Micah Thomas Epps is married to Christina Furr Epps, and they live in Fort Mill, South Carolina, and they are the parents of Lynn’s two grandchildren, Evelyn Athena Epps and Maxwell Grey Epps. They all visited their Mother and Grandmother before her passing. Lynn is also survived by her brother, Paul D. Thomas, and her sister, Patricia Ann Thomas, both of Dothan. She has one niece, Michele Morris of Dothan. Two first cousins also survive her and have been extremely close all their lives; they are Carroll Long of Washington, D. C. and Carter (Donna) Fowlkes of Atlanta, GA.
Mrs. Epps lived in numerous towns throughout southern Alabama and the panhandle of Florida as her husband pastored churches for thirty-seven years. She was always the most supportive and helpful of pastors’ wives. Forever a very good churchwoman, she volunteered her service and her own ministry at every church and was employed in Andalusia for several years as the secretary to the District Superintendent. She lived in Pensacola, Mary Esther, and Marianna in Florida, and she lived in Chatom, Citronelle, Andalusia, Enterprise, Greensboro, and Dothan in Alabama. In 2008, she moved into the only home she owned with her husband and lived there through retirement in 2011 and on to the present. Lynn rejoined First United Methodist Church in 2008 and was an active member of the Progressors Sunday School class. The members of the Progressors class will be Honorary Pallbearers at her service.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Kindred Hospice for the loving care and kindness shown to Lynn during her illness.
