Major (RET) Walter W. “Speed” Nichols, age 96, of Enterprise, AL, passed away Sunday, November 15, 2015 in Enterprise. 


Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, November 19, 2015 at First Baptist Church with Rev. Ben Bowden and Rev. Sonny Moore officiating.  Burial will follow in Meadowlawn Cemetery with Searcy Funeral Home directing.  The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday beginning at 1:00 P.M.  Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, 302 North Main Street, Enterprise, AL 36330.


Speed was a decorated combat veteran of WWII.  He parachuted behind enemy lines the day before D-Day on June 5, 1944.  He later served in The Korean War in 1952 before retiring in 1965.


Speed was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Tula Gilchrist Nichols, his parents, Walter Baston Nichols and Claudia Wilson, siblings, Willie Mae “Bill” Martin, Shelley Lamar Nichols, Elma “Gene” Smith, Wilson Ray Nichols and Sara Holland.


Survivors include two daughters, Debby (Gordon) McCullough, Austin, TX; Elisa (Al) Hollmann, Harvest, AL; four grandchildren, Wade (Laura)Waters, San Antonio, TX; John (Melanie) Waters Austin, TX; James Hollmann, Harvest, AL; Ashley (U. G.) Wilson Madison, AL; eight great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cherished friends.
