HEADLAND…Mamie Kate Mitchell Atkinson, a resident of Headland, died early Tuesday morning, September 15, 2015, in Westside Terrace in Dothan. She was 96.
Private services will be held at a later date. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to Lifesaver’s Therapeutic Riding, 608 County Road 87, Headland, Alabama 36345.
Mrs. Atkinson was a lifelong resident of Headland, daughter of the late William Arthur Mitchell, Sr. and Beulah Cunningham Mitchell. She was a graduate of the Henry County High School in Headland. Mrs. Atkinson attended Auburn University and later graduated from Huntingdon College in Montgomery. She was the oldest member of the Headland United Methodist Church and the Charlie Burdeshaw Sunday School Class. In earlier years, Mrs. Atkinson was an avid golfer at the Olympia Spa and the Headland Country Club. An artist, one of her favorite hobbies was oil painting on canvas for her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Pace Atkinson.
Surviving relatives include two daughters, Kay Atkinson Evans (Jack) and Jill Atkinson Solomon (John W.); a brother, William A. (Bud) Mitchell, Jr. (Betty), all of Headland; four grandchildren, Ashley Evans, Pete Solomon (Carllee), Lance Evans (Melissa), and Allison Davis (Kevin); two step-grandchildren, Ryan Solomon (Nancy) and Abby Phillips (Todd); four great-grandchildren, Ellie Kate Solomon, Rylan Davis, Lincoln Evans, Haydin Edwards, and one great-grandchild on the way; five step-great-grandchildren; a niece, Amanda Mitchell Mueller (Jon), a nephew, William E. Mitchell.
