Mrs. Mamie Loraine Baker Jeffries, a resident of Dothan, passed away Tuesday, October 4, 2016 in Statesville, North Carolina. She was 95.
Born June 11, 1921 in Geneva County to the late Lewis Jackson and Lela Mae Hallford Baker, Loraine was a member of Highland Park United Methodist Church. She was brought up on a farm with five sisters and two brothers. She lived in Dothan from 1941 – 1955 and was a member of Headland Avenue Methodist Church. She married Maxwell H. Jeffries in the 1940’s who was a printer for the Dothan Eagle. They moved to Washington D. C. and lived there from 1955 – 1983 and then returned to Dothan, where she remained. She loved visiting with her many friends and family. She loved working in the yard and was a very competitive bowler.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Maxwell H. Jeffries; her sisters, Hazel Brunell Dooling, Martha Jeanette Brown-Elam, and Johnnie Lee Daughtry; her brothers, Jack Jr. Baker and Billy Ray Baker.
Survivors include her daughters, Starla F. Adams and Charlotte A. Nixon; her son, William S. Jeffries; her sisters, Mary Sue Haywood and JoAnn Dasinger; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A celebration of Mrs. Loraine’s life will be held 2 PM, Thursday, October 20, 2016 at Ward Wilson Funeral Home with Reverend Sam Persons Parks officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 PM until 2 PM, one hour prior to the service.
