 Margene F. McCracken


Margene F. Livingston McCracken, a resident of Dothan, Alabama passed away October 18, 2014 peacefully, with her three daughters at her side. She was 81 years old. 


The family will receive friends for visitation at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel, Dothan, Al. on Monday, October 20, 2014 from 5:30pm - 7:00pm followed by the service immediately after the visitation. Pastor Wayne Newton of Webb United Methodist Church will be officiating.  Family graveside service will be the following morning in Troy, Al. at Union Hill Cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home directing and Hospice Chaplin Eddie Biss officiating.


Surviving relatives include 3 daughters, Patricia McCracken Howell (John) of Millbrook, Janet McCracken Hasty (Halcot) of Webb and Lindy McCracken Hamm of Dothan; five grandchildren, Scott Steward (Melissa) of Montgomery, Aleisha Brook Pitts (Jonathan) of Auburn, Jason Rose (Tova) of Birmingham, Tori Hamm and Amber Hamm of Dothan; six great-grandchildren, Wesley and Mason Steward, Tyler Brooks, Carter Pitts and Bella and Jordan Rose. She is also survived by her sister, Annis Hughes (Jim) and their son Randy Hughes (Chantel) of Goshen.


Margene McCracken was preceded in her death by her husband, John J. McCracken, Jr., her sister, Marion Saunders of Troy, her mother, Gladys Livingston Burks and her father, Fred Livingston, also of Troy.


Margene Livingston McCracken was born November 23, 1932 in Troy, Al. where she met and married John J. McCracken, Jr. of San Diego, Ca. He was stationed at Fort Rucker. They were stationed in California, England and Idaho during his military service.  In 1986, after retiring from the service, they resided in Prattville, Al. where she was employed by Walmart for 18 years.  As a couple they enjoyed being charter members of the Gold Wing Motorcycle Association.  They bought a home in Dothan in 2001, where he passed away in 2008.  Margene remained in her home up until 2013, when declining health issues made it necessary for her to move to Extendicare in Dothan, Al.


Margene McCracken was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  Her most treasured moments were when all her loved ones were gathered together with her on holidays and at family celebrations.  She was much loved by everyone who knew her and those of us who are her family feel very blessed to have known and loved her all of our lives. Her absence leaves a void that can never be filled.We would like to take the opportunity to convey heartfelt thanks to Gentiva Hospice's professional and caring staff as well as Extendicare and they're continued loving care and support that our family knows extended her life beyond our expectations.
