Martha Ann Graves Roughton
Martha Ann Graves Roughton, 86, devoted and loving matriarch and friend, died peacefully at 6:00 am on June 30th in Hoover, Alabama at Aspire Nursing Care.
Ann, daughter of Robert Pickens Graves and Mattie Melissa Wise Graves, was a native of Elba, Alabama. She graduated from Andalusia High School. Ann met her husband Bill in Andalusia while he was managing a family owned restaurant. After Ann married, her husband Bill began a career with Morrison’s Cafeteria. While living in Columbus, Ga, Ann was an active member of the Jaycettes where she was involved with the Miss Georgia pageant. Later, Ann was an active member of the College Park Women’s Club where she served as president for 2 terms. During this period, Ann spent a great deal of time at Lakeside Country Club in Atlanta golfing. Ann and Bill then moved to Jackson, Mississippi where Ann continued her community service. During her husband’s retirement, Ann and Bill lived in Jackson, Mississippi; Columbus, Georgia; and Dothan, Alabama. They lived here for the past 25 years and were members of the First United Methodist Church of Dothan.
Ann was preceded in death by her parents, her husband William Alonza Roughton, Sr., and her siblings Marguerite Graves Hornsby, Evelyn Graves Morrow, Alma Graves Gordon and Doris Graves Jackson Tew. She is survived by her children Michael Maurice Gordon of Waynesville, N.C., William Alonza Roughton, Jr. .of Ocala, FL, and Angela Karen Roughton Hitt of Birmingham, AL, and her siblings Helen Graves Werts of Montgomery, Alabama and Effie Graves Wiggins of Nashville, Tennessee and their respective families.
Funeral services will be held at Ward Wilson Funeral Home at 2414 Hartford Highway at 2:00 pm on Monday, July 2nd. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 pm preceding the service.
