COLUMBIA. . .Martha McCord Arnett, a former resident of Columbia, Alabama, died Thursday night, February 1, 2024, in the Crenshaw Community Hospital in Luverne, Alabama. She was 88.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, February 5, 2024, in the Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery, near Columbia, with Reverend Don Tew officiating. The family will receive friends following the graveside services. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 1449 Medical Park Drive, Birmingham, AL 35213 or to Alzheimer’s Association, 1 Metroplex Drive, Suite 230, Birmingham, AL 35209.
Mrs. Arnett was born and reared in the Dothan area of Houston County, daughter of the late Lewis McCord and Tessie Davis McCord. She was a graduate of Ashford High School. Mrs. Arnett lived in Columbia most of her adult lifetime where she was a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church. She was formerly employed by Judy Bond Blouse Co. and Warner Brothers. In later years, Mrs. Arnett was self-employed as a seamstress in her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Douglas “Ray” Arnett, sisters, Christine Glass, Mildred Lewis, Dorothy Kinlaw and Sarah Peeples and brothers, Ralph McCord, Raymond Douglas “Pete” McCord, Randall “Red” McCord and Billy McCord.
Surviving relatives include two daughters, Angela Arnett Carpenter (Alan), Luverne, AL; and Kelly Arnett Carter (Art), Ashford; two brothers, Jimmy McCord (Judy), Wicksburg; and Rudy McCord (Peggy), Dothan; sisters-in-law, Merle McCord and Leneve McCord, and a brother-in-law, Gary Peeples; grandchildren, Jessica Carpenter Miller (Wes), Foster Carpenter (Mallory) and Mollie Carter (Ansa); great-grandchildren, Lily Grace Carpenter, Avery Miller and Mary Alan Carpenter, numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their appreciation and a special thank you to Aveanna Hospice, Crenshaw Community Hospital including Dr. and Mrs. Samuel Patrick Walker, special friends and caregivers, Ethel “Big Mama” Dorsey and Gussie “Little Mama” Carter for the loving care and kindness shown to Mrs. Arnett during her illness.
